About the medicine

What it is and how it works

Clindamycin + benzoyl peroxide is a fixed-dose gel authorised in the EU for mild to moderate acne, particularly inflammatory lesions, in adults and adolescents from 12 years. NICE lists it as a first-line 12-week option for mild to moderate acne.

Topical antibiotics are never prescribed alone because resistance develops quickly; benzoyl peroxide prevents that. Continuous use is limited to 12 weeks, after which a licensed doctor moves you to an antibiotic-free maintenance treatment.

Who it is for

  • One thin layer at night over the affected area
  • Antibiotic always paired with benzoyl peroxide to limit resistance

Your questions answered

Clindamycin + benzoyl peroxide13 questions
What is clindamycin + benzoyl peroxide gel used for?
It combines a topical antibiotic (clindamycin 1%) with benzoyl peroxide (3% or 5%) for mild to moderate acne, particularly inflammatory lesions, in adults and adolescents from 12 years. Benzoyl peroxide reduces the risk of antibiotic resistance, which is why clindamycin is never prescribed alone.
A thin layer once a day in the evening to the whole affected area after washing and patting dry. Continuous use is limited to 12 weeks; the doctor then reviews whether to switch to an antibiotic-free maintenance treatment such as adapalene + benzoyl peroxide or azelaic acid.

Redness, peeling and dryness are very common and usually mild; burning is common. It bleaches hair and fabric and increases sun sensitivity. Stop and contact your doctor if severe or prolonged diarrhoea develops, since antibiotic-associated colitis has been reported with topical clindamycin.
Whether inflamed lesions are prominent enough to justify an antibiotic, any history of inflammatory bowel disease or antibiotic-associated colitis, allergy to clindamycin or lincomycin, and other topical products such as retinoids or erythromycin that should not be combined with it.
Write to your doctor in the private chat in your account: describe what you notice and when it started. The doctor can adjust the plan, pause it or suggest another option. If you have severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or chest pain, call 112 or go to an emergency department straight away.
It depends on what you take. List every medicine, supplement and herbal product in the questionnaire, including ones you use only occasionally. The doctor checks for interactions before prescribing, and your pharmacist checks again when you collect Clindamycin + benzoyl peroxide.
The doctor can choose another topical option for your skin, adjust how you use it, or refer you to an in-person dermatologist when your skin needs an examination or a treatment that is not prescribed online.
Skin treatments need several weeks to show a change. You can write to your doctor in the private chat about irritation or doubts, and at the end of the course a follow-up consultation with new photos decides whether to continue, change or stop.

In Spanish pharmacies it is dispensed from the QR; outside Spain, the pharmacist dispenses the locally marketed equivalent of the same active ingredient.
