What causes hair loss?
Hair loss becomes more common with age but can start early. The most common cause is male or female pattern hair loss, driven by genetics and the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

How can I treat hair loss?
Some treatments prevent further loss, especially when started early. Finasteride targets DHT; minoxidil supports the follicles. They can be combined for better results.
The science behind hair-loss treatments
How clinically proven treatments counteract the two main causes of pattern hair loss: DHT and shrinking follicles.
Why is hair lost?
DHT shrinks follicles over time, so hairs grow thinner and shorter until growth stops.
How finasteride helps
Finasteride blocks the enzyme that makes DHT, protecting follicles from further shrinking.
How minoxidil helps
Minoxidil improves blood flow to the follicle and prolongs the growth phase.
What to know before your consultation
Pattern hair loss and its treatment
Male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is the most common cause of thinning hair in men. It runs in families and is driven by the hormone DHT, which gradually shrinks the hair follicles at the hairline and crown. The options a doctor may consider through Hi Doctor are finasteride tablets, topical minoxidil, low-dose oral minoxidil and, in selected cases, dutasteride or a compounded formula. For women with female pattern hair loss, minoxidil is usually the main option, and finasteride or dutasteride are never used in women who are pregnant or could become pregnant.
Who online hair care suits
The consultation suits adults with gradual thinning at the hairline, crown or top of the scalp that follows a typical pattern. Sudden, patchy or scarring hair loss, a painful or inflamed scalp, or hair loss while feeling generally unwell needs an in-person examination, and in that case the doctor tells you and your fee is refunded. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy cannot be offered these treatments online. Men with prostate problems, low mood or plans to have children should mention it in the questionnaire.
Side effects and safety points
Finasteride and dutasteride can cause lower sex drive, erection or ejaculation problems and breast tenderness, and in rare cases sexual problems have continued after stopping. European regulators also require a warning about mood changes, including depression and suicidal thoughts, so stop and contact your doctor if your mood changes. Minoxidil can irritate the scalp, cause temporary extra shedding at the start and unwanted facial or body hair, and the oral form can cause fluid retention or a fast heartbeat. Chest pain, fainting, sudden swelling or thoughts of self-harm need urgent help: call 112.
Other options for hair loss
Pattern hair loss does not harm your physical health, so not treating it is a reasonable choice, and some people prefer styling, hair fibres or a hairpiece. Hair transplant surgery is another route and needs an in-person assessment with a specialist. A dermatologist can examine hair loss that does not follow a typical pattern. If the doctor decides treatment is not appropriate for you, they explain why in the private chat and your consultation fee is refunded.
Hair-loss research and approvals
Finasteride 1 mg is authorised in EU countries for male pattern hair loss, and minoxidil solutions and foams are authorised for use on the scalp. In a two-year trial in men with pattern hair loss, 83% of those taking finasteride had no further visible loss, compared with 28% on placebo. In a 48-week trial in men, 5% topical minoxidil grew more hair than the 2% strength and placebo. Low-dose oral minoxidil and dutasteride are used off-label for hair loss, based on clinical trials and large case series rather than an EU licence for this use.
How your hair consultation works
You complete an online questionnaire about the pattern and extent of your hair loss, your family history, your health and any medicines you take. An EU-licensed doctor reviews your answers, may ask follow-up questions in the private chat in your account, and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. If it is, you collect the treatment at a pharmacy of your choice and pay the pharmacy for it. Prescriptions are valid at pharmacies across the EU, although in some countries the pharmacist dispenses the local equivalent of the same active ingredient.
Reviews and staying on treatment
Hair treatments work slowly: less shedding usually comes first and visible change takes several months, so results are judged after a steady period of daily use. Your doctor reviews progress and side effects at regular check-ins and before renewals, and changes are never automatic. Treatment only works while you keep using it, and the benefit is gradually lost after stopping. Message your doctor in the private chat if you notice side effects, a change in mood or faster hair loss.
