What is it?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells. It can appear as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples or cysts, mainly on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders.

Although most common during adolescence, acne can appear at any age and its severity ranges from mild to severe inflammatory forms. Hormonal changes, certain medications and genetics all play a role.

In the online consultation, the doctor grades the type and severity from the questionnaire and photos, rules out other causes and prescribes a topical treatment when the acne is mild to moderate. Nodules, cysts and scarring need an in-person assessment.

What is Acne?
Acne sits within the dermatology area that Hi-Doctor covers. Our doctors review your case individually, not through an algorithm, and propose a therapeutic approach when indicated.
You fill in a dermatology-oriented medical questionnaire (~5 min). An EU-licensed doctor reviews your clinical history, current medication, allergies and background in less than 2 hours on average. If clarifications are needed, they message you via the private chat in your account.
The doctor proposes the most appropriate treatment among those authorised in the EU for dermatology. A skin consultation is a €40 one-off. Other areas: €25/month for weight loss, €15/month (billed €45 every 90 days) for hair growth and €35 per sexual health consultation. If your case is not eligible, the applicable fee is refunded in full.
It depends on the case. For dermatology, reasonable timelines are explained during the consultation and follow-up lives inside the private chat. The full medical record stays in an auditable thread inside your account.

More about your care

An EU-licensed doctor reviews your questionnaire and photos and prescribes one of three well-studied topical treatments. Severe or scarring cases are referred to in-person care.

HOW COMMON IT IS

One of the most common skin conditions: very frequent during adolescence and persisting into adulthood in a share of cases, particularly in women.

CAUSES

  • Increased sebum production driven by hormonal changes
  • Clogging of pores by dead skin cells and sebum
  • Proliferation of the bacterium Cutibacterium acnes
  • Genetic predisposition
  • External factors such as occlusive cosmetics, mechanical pressure or certain medications

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • Azelaic acid 15% gel, twice daily, for mild to moderate acne
  • Adapalene with benzoyl peroxide, once nightly, when comedones come with papules or pustules
  • Clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide, once nightly, for inflammatory acne, limited to 12 weeks
  • Gentle cleansing with non-comedogenic products and daily sun protection
  • Review at 12 weeks to continue, switch or refer
  • Oral antibiotics and isotretinoin only through in-person care

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

See a doctor if acne is persistent, leaves marks or affects your wellbeing. If you have nodules, cysts, scarring, or acne that has not responded to previous prescription treatment, you need an in-person assessment; the online consultation screens for this and tells you before you pay.

Yes. Hi-Doctor runs 100% online across the EU, so from Lithuania you can fill in the questionnaire and receive the medical review without travelling. The electronic prescription issued by the licensed doctor is valid at any EU pharmacy under Directive 2011/24/EU; outside Spain the pharmacist dispenses the locally marketed equivalent of the same active ingredient.
The doctor reviews its appearance and progression, your history, allergies, current products and clear photos when needed. If your skin needs an in-person examination, the doctor refers you before prescribing.
The private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Privada Electrónica) is issued by a licensed doctor in Spain. It is a PDF carrying every field required by EU Directive 2011/24/EU (patient, prescriber with country of registration, active ingredient, dose), which makes it legally recognised across all 27 EU member states. In Spanish pharmacies it is dispensed from the QR; outside Spain, the pharmacist dispenses the locally marketed equivalent of the same active ingredient.
