What is it?
Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells. It can appear as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples or cysts, mainly on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders.
Although most common during adolescence, acne can appear at any age and its severity ranges from mild to severe inflammatory forms. Hormonal changes, certain medications and genetics all play a role.
In the online consultation, the doctor grades the type and severity from the questionnaire and photos, rules out other causes and prescribes a topical treatment when the acne is mild to moderate. Nodules, cysts and scarring need an in-person assessment.

HOW COMMON IT IS
One of the most common skin conditions: very frequent during adolescence and persisting into adulthood in a share of cases, particularly in women.
CAUSES
- Increased sebum production driven by hormonal changes
- Clogging of pores by dead skin cells and sebum
- Proliferation of the bacterium Cutibacterium acnes
- Genetic predisposition
- External factors such as occlusive cosmetics, mechanical pressure or certain medications
TREATMENT APPROACHES
- Azelaic acid 15% gel, twice daily, for mild to moderate acne
- Adapalene with benzoyl peroxide, once nightly, when comedones come with papules or pustules
- Clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide, once nightly, for inflammatory acne, limited to 12 weeks
- Gentle cleansing with non-comedogenic products and daily sun protection
- Review at 12 weeks to continue, switch or refer
- Oral antibiotics and isotretinoin only through in-person care
