Common questions
Why does my BMR matter for weight loss?
It is the energy your body burns just staying alive. Any eating plan should stay at or above it. Dropping far below for weeks slows metabolism and costs muscle.
Can I raise my BMR?
Yes, slowly. Muscle tissue burns more at rest than fat, so strength training and adequate protein nudge it up over months. There is no quick fix.
Which formula does this calculator use?
Mifflin-St Jeor: the equation the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics rates as most accurate for most adults. It can still be off by about 10% either way.
About BMR
How it works
This is your floor: the energy your body needs on a fully restful day. Eating below it for long periods is not sustainable.
