More about your care

What is it?

A urinary tract infection is inflammation of the urinary tract caused by bacteria, usually Escherichia coli. When it affects the bladder it is called cystitis, and its hallmark symptoms are burning on urination, frequency and urgency.

It is far more common in women than in men due to anatomical differences: the female urethra is shorter and closer to the anus, making it easier for bacteria to enter. In men, UTIs are often associated with older age or prostate conditions.

Most uncomplicated UTIs resolve with antibiotics, but it is important to distinguish when symptoms indicate a lower tract infection (cystitis) versus when the kidney may be affected (pyelonephritis), as this changes the care pathway.

Burning and urgency can fit a lower UTI, but fever, flank pain, pregnancy or recurrent infection change the care route. A doctor reviews the pattern before considering an antibiotic.

HOW COMMON IT IS

Urinary tract infections are far more common in women than in men due to anatomical differences. In men they are often associated with factors such as older age or prostate conditions.

CAUSES

  • Bacteria entering the urethra from the gastrointestinal tract
  • Sexual intercourse
  • Urinary retention or incomplete bladder emptying
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (in men)
  • Catheter use or urinary instrumentation

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • Increased fluid intake
  • Antibiotics after medical assessment (avoid self-medication)
  • Urinary antiseptics in mild or recurrent cases
  • Hygiene measures and complete bladder emptying
  • Assessment of underlying risk factors in recurrent infections

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

See a doctor if you have burning on urination, urgent and frequent need to urinate, or blood in the urine. Fever or flank pain requires same-day medical attention.

You fill in a sexual health-oriented medical questionnaire (~5 min). An EU-licensed doctor reviews your clinical history, current medication, allergies and background in less than 2 hours on average. If clarifications are needed, they message you via the private chat in your account.
The doctor proposes the most appropriate treatment among those authorised in the EU for sexual health. A sexual health consultation is a €35 one-off. It depends on the case. For sexual health, reasonable timelines are explained during the consultation and follow-up lives inside the private chat. The full medical record stays in an auditable thread inside your account.
