More about your care

What is it?

Telogen effluvium is a form of diffuse hair shedding that occurs when a physiological or psychological stress event causes a large number of follicles to enter the resting phase (telogen) prematurely. Unlike other forms of alopecia, there is no follicle destruction, so recovery is usually spontaneous.

Common triggers include intense emotional stress, a febrile illness, major surgery or sudden hormonal changes. The doctor reviews the clinical history to identify the cause and confirm the diagnosis.

Read the full condition information

Telogen effluvium usually resolves once the trigger is gone. The doctor decides whether you need support or simply time.

HOW COMMON IT IS

One of the most common reasons for consultation for diffuse hair loss in primary care.

CAUSES

  • Intense emotional or physical stress
  • Acute febrile illness (flu, COVID-19)
  • Hormonal changes (postpartum, menopause)
  • Rapid weight loss or restrictive diets
  • Major surgery or trauma
  • Medications that alter the hair cycle

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • Identification and removal of the triggering factor
  • Nutritional support if deficits are detected
  • Topical or oral minoxidil in prolonged cases
  • Clinical follow-up to confirm recovery

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

If you notice diffuse, heavy hair shedding that persists for more than three months, the doctor assesses the possible causes and guides you on the most appropriate management.

Through the pattern of loss, how long it has been progressing, family history and current medication. In some cases we ask for scalp photos. The doctor proposes a tailored treatment plan and adjusts it to your tolerance.
