More about your care

What is it?

Postpartum hair loss is a form of telogen effluvium that occurs after pregnancy. During pregnancy, elevated estrogen levels keep a higher proportion of hair in the growth phase. After childbirth, the hormonal drop causes many follicles to enter the resting phase simultaneously, resulting in intense, diffuse shedding.

This process usually begins between two and four months after delivery and is temporary. The doctor assesses whether the shedding follows the expected course or if there is an additional factor that requires attention.

Postpartum shedding is a hormonal form of telogen effluvium. The doctor advises on options that are safe during breastfeeding and afterwards.

HOW COMMON IT IS

It is very common after childbirth, manifesting in the months following birth.

CAUSES

  • Sharp drop in estrogen after childbirth
  • Physiological stress of delivery
  • Changes in diet and nutritional needs
  • Sleep disruption during the postpartum period

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • General hair care measures
  • Nutritional supplementation if deficits are detected
  • Minoxidil in cases of prolonged recovery
  • Reassurance and monitoring, as it is usually self-limiting

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

If postpartum shedding persists for more than six months or if you have concerns about safe options during breastfeeding, the doctor assesses your situation and guides you.
