What is it?
Peyronie's disease is an acquired condition in which fibrous plaques form in the tunica albuginea of the penis, causing abnormal curvature during erection. It may be accompanied by pain, penile shortening and difficulty with penetration.
The disease typically goes through two phases: an acute or inflammatory phase, in which pain appears and curvature may progress, and a chronic or stable phase, in which pain subsides and curvature stabilises. The duration of each phase varies between individuals.
The timing of assessment matters: during the acute phase, options to reduce progression and pain may be considered, while in the stable chronic phase, corrective surgery is an option for those whose curvature makes penetration difficult.

Severe Peyronie's usually needs an in-person urology assessment. For mild cases, the doctor tells you whether Hi-Doctor fits or refers you on.
HOW COMMON IT IS
Affects a small percentage of men, mainly between 40 and 60 years of age, though many mild cases go undiagnosed because they are not brought to medical attention.
CAUSES
- Repeated microtrauma during sexual activity
- Genetic predisposition
- Associated Dupuytren's disease
- Diabetes
- Previous prostate surgery
- Connective tissue disorders
TREATMENT APPROACHES
- Observation and monitoring in mild non-progressive cases
- No oral medication has shown sufficient efficacy; some have been studied with limited results
- Intralesional injections assessed by a specialist (collagenase is no longer marketed in Europe)
- Low-intensity shockwave therapy for pain in the acute phase (does not correct curvature or plaque)
- Traction or extension devices
- Corrective surgery in stable severe cases
WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR
See a doctor if you notice penile curvature you did not have before, if it hurts during erection or if the curvature makes penetration difficult. Early assessment can help decide the best time to intervene.
