More about your care
What is it?
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is an antiretroviral medication taken by an HIV-negative person to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV through sex. It is not a vaccine, does not cure HIV, and does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections.
There are two dosing schedules: daily dosing (one tablet per day) and event-driven or on-demand dosing (2-1-1), which involves taking two tablets between 2 and 24 hours before sex, one at 24 hours and another at 48 hours. The event-driven schedule is only indicated for men who have sex with men.
Before starting PrEP, a negative HIV test and kidney function assessment are essential. Regular follow-up with HIV testing, kidney function monitoring and STI screening is a core part of the programme.
Read the full condition information
PrEP reduces the risk of acquiring HIV when taken on the agreed schedule. HIV infection must be excluded and kidney function checked before starting; follow-up includes regular testing and wider sexual-health care.
HOW COMMON IT IS
PrEP use has grown significantly in Europe since its approval. More public health systems are including it within their HIV prevention strategies.
CAUSES
- Anal or vaginal sex without condoms with partners of unknown or positive HIV status
- Multiple sexual partners without consistent condom use
- Injecting drug use or chemsex
- Recent diagnosis of other STIs as a risk marker
- Sexual partner with HIV without suppressed viral load
- Sex work
TREATMENT APPROACHES
- Daily tablet of tenofovir-emtricitabine combination
- Event-driven dosing (2-1-1) for scheduled anal sex in men
- Negative HIV test before starting and every 3 months
- Kidney function monitoring at baseline and during follow-up
- Regular STI screening
- Referral to public health services when appropriate
WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR
If you think PrEP may be right for you, see a doctor for a full assessment including HIV testing, kidney function checks and STI screening before starting.
