More about your care

What is it?

Emergency contraception is a method used after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure to reduce the risk of pregnancy. Options include the emergency pill (levonorgestrel or ulipristal acetate) and the copper IUD.

The choice between these options depends on the time elapsed since unprotected sex, the point in the menstrual cycle and body weight. The pill's efficacy decreases with time, while the copper IUD remains effective for up to five days.

Emergency contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. If there is a risk of STIs, the doctor may recommend additional testing. In any case, it is best to consult as soon as possible to choose the most appropriate option for each situation.

Time since sex, cycle timing, usual contraception and other medicines determine the most suitable option. Emergency pills do not protect against STIs, and the copper IUD remains the most effective emergency option.

HOW COMMON IT IS

Its use is common across all age groups. In Europe, a significant proportion of women have used emergency contraception at least once.

CAUSES

  • Sexual intercourse without a condom or other contraceptive method
  • Condom breakage or slippage
  • Missed regular contraceptive pill
  • Barrier method failure
  • Unprotected sexual assault
  • Incorrect calculation of the fertile window

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • Levonorgestrel pill (up to 72 hours, decreasing efficacy)
  • Ulipristal acetate pill (up to 120 hours, more stable efficacy)
  • Copper IUD (up to 5 days, most effective option plus ongoing contraception)
  • Choice depends on time elapsed, weight and cycle timing
  • Does not protect against STIs. Test if at risk

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

Ideally consult as soon as possible after unprotected sex, as emergency pill efficacy decreases with time. If unsure which option is best, a doctor can help decide.

Emergency contraception sits within the sexual health area that Hi-Doctor covers. Our doctors review your case individually, not through an algorithm, and propose a therapeutic approach when indicated.
You fill in a sexual health-oriented medical questionnaire (~5 min). An EU-licensed doctor reviews your clinical history, current medication, allergies and background in less than 2 hours on average. If clarifications are needed, they message you via the private chat in your account.
The doctor proposes the most appropriate treatment among those authorised in the EU for sexual health. A sexual health consultation is a €35 one-off. Other areas: €25/month for weight loss, €15/month (billed €45 every 90 days) for hair growth and €40 per skin consultation. If your case is not eligible, the applicable fee is refunded in full.
It depends on the case. For sexual health, reasonable timelines are explained during the consultation and follow-up lives inside the private chat. The full medical record stays in an auditable thread inside your account.

Yes. All communication happens in the private chat of your account, GDPR-compliant. The doctor treats discretion as a core of the service and there is no history visible outside your consultation.
The private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Privada Electrónica) is issued by a licensed doctor in Spain. It is a PDF carrying every field required by EU Directive 2011/24/EU (patient, prescriber with country of registration, active ingredient, dose), which makes it legally recognised across all 27 EU member states. In Spanish pharmacies it is dispensed from the QR; outside Spain, the pharmacist dispenses the locally marketed equivalent of the same active ingredient.
