More about your care
What is it?
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It can affect the cervix, urethra, rectum and pharynx. It often produces no symptoms, which facilitates unknowing transmission.
When symptoms do appear, they may include abnormal discharge, pain on urination or lower abdominal pain in women, and urethral discharge or testicular discomfort in men. However, the absence of symptoms does not mean the absence of infection or risk of complications.
Without treatment, chlamydia can cause complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease and fertility problems in women. Early diagnosis through specific testing and antibiotic treatment can resolve the infection and prevent its transmission.
Read the full condition information
Chlamydia may cause no symptoms. Safe care combines appropriate testing, an antibiotic when confirmed or clinically indicated, and clear advice on partners, abstinence and repeat testing.
HOW COMMON IT IS
One of the most notified bacterial STIs in Europe, particularly in young adults under 25. Diagnosis rates have risen in recent years due to increased testing.
CAUSES
- Vaginal, anal or oral sex without a condom with an infected person
- Perinatal transmission (mother to child during delivery)
- Genital-to-genital contact without penetration
- Sharing sex toys without protection
- Concomitant infection with other STIs
- Re-infection if the partner does not receive treatment
TREATMENT APPROACHES
- Oral antibiotic (azithromycin or doxycycline) as prescribed
- Sexual abstinence until treatment is completed and symptoms resolve
- Test of cure in selected cases
- Partner notification and treatment
- Testing for other associated STIs
- Repeat testing after 3 months due to re-infection risk
WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR
If you have had a risk exposure or have symptoms such as abnormal discharge, pain on urination or abdominal pain, see a doctor. Also if a partner has told you they have chlamydia.
