What is it?
Androgenetic alopecia (common baldness) is a progressive, genetic form of hair loss. Androgens act on predisposed follicles, shortening the growth phase and thinning each hair.
In men it shows as a receding hairline and thinning crown; in women, as diffuse thinning on top of the scalp.

HOW COMMON IT IS
The most common form of hair loss: its frequency increases with age in men, and it also affects many women after menopause.
CAUSES
- Genetic predisposition (polygenic inheritance)
- Action of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on hair follicles
- Advancing age
- Hormonal factors, particularly during menopause
TREATMENT APPROACHES
- Topical or oral minoxidil to stimulate growth
- Finasteride or dutasteride to reduce DHT conversion
- Combination therapies based on patient profile
- Regular medical follow-up to assess response
