What to know before your consultation
Six focused sexual-health services
Hi Doctor offers six separate sexual-health consultations: erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, emergency contraception, urinary tract infection, chlamydia and HIV PrEP. Each one has its own questionnaire written for that condition. Depending on your answers, a doctor may consider erection tablets or cream, an on-demand tablet for premature ejaculation, an emergency contraceptive pill, a short antibiotic course for confirmed cystitis or chlamydia, or PrEP tablets to lower the chance of HIV. Practical advice is part of every pathway, and the doctor only prescribes when it is clinically appropriate.
Who these consultations suit
The sexual-health consultations are for people with a common, clearly described concern that a doctor can assess safely from written answers and, where needed, a recent test result. Some pathways have their own conditions: chlamydia treatment needs a positive test, and cystitis treatment is for women with a positive urine dipstick. Pregnancy, severe pain, fever, a possible HIV exposure in the last few days or sexual assault need in-person care, and the questionnaire tells you before you pay. If online care is not safe for you, the doctor refers you instead.
Safety checks in every pathway
Every prescription medicine can cause side effects, and some combinations are dangerous, such as erection tablets taken with nitrate heart medicines or poppers. That is why each questionnaire asks about your heart, kidneys, liver, pregnancy, allergies and current medicines. Warning signs that need urgent in-person care include chest pain during sex, an erection that will not go down, fever with pelvic, back or testicular pain, and severe one-sided abdominal pain after unprotected sex. In an emergency, call 112 rather than waiting for a reply in the chat.
Other routes to care
Online care is one option, not the only one. Your family doctor, a sexual-health clinic, a urologist or a gynaecologist can examine you in person, run tests and offer treatments that cannot be started online, such as a copper IUD after unprotected sex. Condoms, regular testing, lifestyle changes and talking therapy help with several of these concerns. If the doctor decides treatment is not appropriate, they explain why, suggest the next step, and your consultation fee is refunded in full.
What guidelines and regulators say
The treatments considered here follow European and international guidance. The European Association of Urology recommends lifestyle advice and PDE5 inhibitor tablets as first-line treatment for erectile dysfunction, and dapoxetine or a local anaesthetic spray for lifelong premature ejaculation. The World Health Organization notes that chlamydia is generally curable with antibiotics and that most sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms. The European Medicines Agency has authorised ulipristal acetate for emergency contraception within five days, and emtricitabine with tenofovir disoproxil for HIV PrEP alongside safer sex.
How your consultation works
You choose the pathway that matches your concern and answer a short questionnaire about your symptoms, health and medicines. Some pathways ask you to upload a recent result, such as a negative HIV test or a positive chlamydia test. An EU-licensed doctor reads your answers and replies in the private chat in your account, where they may ask follow-up questions. If treatment is appropriate, they issue an e-prescription that you collect and pay for at a pharmacy of your choice in the EU. There is no video call, WhatsApp or phone line.
Follow-up after your consultation
Questions after your prescription are answered in the same private chat. Some treatments are one-off, such as emergency contraception or an antibiotic course, while others, such as erection tablets or PrEP, are reviewed over time and renewed through a new consultation. PrEP needs regular HIV, STI and kidney tests to continue safely. Get back in touch if side effects appear, symptoms do not improve or come back, or your health or medicines change, and seek urgent care for any warning sign.
