What to know before your consultation

Pattern hair loss and its treatment

Male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is the most common cause of thinning hair in men. It runs in families and is driven by the hormone DHT, which gradually shrinks the hair follicles at the hairline and crown. The options a doctor may consider through Hi Doctor are finasteride tablets, topical minoxidil, low-dose oral minoxidil and, in selected cases, dutasteride or a compounded formula. For women with female pattern hair loss, minoxidil is usually the main option, and finasteride or dutasteride are never used in women who are pregnant or could become pregnant.

Who online hair care suits

The consultation suits adults with gradual thinning at the hairline, crown or top of the scalp that follows a typical pattern. Sudden, patchy or scarring hair loss, a painful or inflamed scalp, or hair loss while feeling generally unwell needs an in-person examination, and in that case the doctor tells you and your fee is refunded. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy cannot be offered these treatments online. Men with prostate problems, low mood or plans to have children should mention it in the questionnaire.

Side effects and safety points

Finasteride and dutasteride can cause lower sex drive, erection or ejaculation problems and breast tenderness, and in rare cases sexual problems have continued after stopping. European regulators also require a warning about mood changes, including depression and suicidal thoughts, so stop and contact your doctor if your mood changes. Minoxidil can irritate the scalp, cause temporary extra shedding at the start and unwanted facial or body hair, and the oral form can cause fluid retention or a fast heartbeat. Chest pain, fainting, sudden swelling or thoughts of self-harm need urgent help: call 112.

Other options for hair loss

Pattern hair loss does not harm your physical health, so not treating it is a reasonable choice, and some people prefer styling, hair fibres or a hairpiece. Hair transplant surgery is another route and needs an in-person assessment with a specialist. A dermatologist can examine hair loss that does not follow a typical pattern. If the doctor decides treatment is not appropriate for you, they explain why in the private chat and your consultation fee is refunded.

Hair-loss research and approvals

Finasteride 1 mg is authorised in EU countries for male pattern hair loss, and minoxidil solutions and foams are authorised for use on the scalp. In a two-year trial in men with pattern hair loss, 83% of those taking finasteride had no further visible loss, compared with 28% on placebo. In a 48-week trial in men, 5% topical minoxidil grew more hair than the 2% strength and placebo. Low-dose oral minoxidil and dutasteride are used off-label for hair loss, based on clinical trials and large case series rather than an EU licence for this use.

How your hair consultation works

You complete an online questionnaire about the pattern and extent of your hair loss, your family history, your health and any medicines you take. An EU-licensed doctor reviews your answers, may ask follow-up questions in the private chat in your account, and decides whether a prescription is appropriate. If it is, you collect the treatment at a pharmacy of your choice and pay the pharmacy for it. Prescriptions are valid at pharmacies across the EU, although in some countries the pharmacist dispenses the local equivalent of the same active ingredient.

Reviews and staying on treatment

Hair treatments work slowly: less shedding usually comes first and visible change takes several months, so results are judged after a steady period of daily use. Your doctor reviews progress and side effects at regular check-ins and before renewals, and changes are never automatic. Treatment only works while you keep using it, and the benefit is gradually lost after stopping. Message your doctor in the private chat if you notice side effects, a change in mood or faster hair loss.

Do I need a video call?
No. The consultation is written, and the doctor follows up in the chat if needed.

Most people need 3 to 6 months of daily use before judging the effect.
Some are suitable for women and some are not. The doctor decides based on your answers.
At any EU pharmacy with your e-prescription. The medicine is paid there.
Oral finasteride, oral or topical minoxidil, dutasteride, or a personalised compounded formula, chosen for your pattern of hair loss and your history.
Most people notice less shedding after about three months, with visible regrowth from around six months. Consistency matters.
Some options are suitable for women and some are not. The questionnaire asks about your history, and a doctor decides what is appropriate.
Adults with gradual, pattern hair loss: a receding hairline, a thinning crown or diffuse thinning. Sudden or patchy hair loss, or loss with scalp redness, scaling or pain, can have other causes and needs an in-person examination. In that case the doctor tells you before any treatment is approved, and you are not charged.
You answer a 5-minute questionnaire about your hair loss, your health and any medicines you take. An EU-licensed doctor reads it, may ask follow-up questions in the private chat in your account, and replies in under 2 hours on average. If treatment is appropriate, you get an e-prescription valid at pharmacies across the EU, where you collect and pay for the medicine.
Finasteride and dutasteride can cause sexual side effects such as lower libido in a small number of people, usually reversible on stopping. Mood changes have also been reported, so tell your doctor straight away about any low mood. Minoxidil can cause temporary extra shedding at the start, scalp irritation with the topical form, and unwanted hair growth or dizziness with tablets. Your doctor explains what to watch for.
Yes. Pattern hair loss is not harmful to your health, and choosing not to treat it is a valid option. Some people prefer a shorter haircut, hair fibres or a hair system. If the cause is unclear, or you are thinking about a hair transplant, an in-person dermatologist is the right next step, and your doctor tells you when that makes sense.
On the plan, your doctor reviews your progress every 90 days and decides with you whether to continue or adjust treatment. Changes are never automatic. You can cancel anytime from your account, and the plan stops at the end of the current billing period. If you stop treatment, the hair you kept or regrew is usually lost again over the following months, so talk to your doctor first.
