How to use
- Topical application
Apply 1 ml of the 5% solution or foam to the scalp twice daily. Part your hair in the area of thinning and apply directly to the scalp, not the hair. Wash your hands after each application. The foam formulation is preferred if you have sensitive skin.
- Consistency is essential
Apply twice daily, every day, at roughly 12-hour intervals. Missing applications for several days can reduce effectiveness.
- Oral minoxidil
If your doctor has prescribed oral minoxidil (low-dose tablets), take as directed: usually once daily with food. Your doctor will monitor your blood pressure.
First 3 months. Take a monthly photo of your scalp in the same light and angle: it is the most reliable way to judge change. A temporary increase in shedding in the first 4 to 8 weeks is expected with minoxidil and usually signals follicle turnover, not failure.
Ongoing. Report any mood change, breast tenderness or sexual side effects (finasteride): most resolve on stopping, and your doctor can adjust the plan. Report scalp irritation, unwanted facial hair growth, dizziness or palpitations (minoxidil). Results reverse within months of stopping: treatment is long-term maintenance, so review the plan with your doctor at least yearly.

Apply to a dry scalp twice daily
Directly on the thinning areas, not the hair. Wash hands after. Expect a temporary shedding phase: it signals follicle turnover.
At 4 months, do your monthly photos show new fine hairs or a denser part line?

Continue twice daily
Peak results are judged around 12 months; stopping reverses gains within 3-4 months.
No

Dose schedule
| Dose | When | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 mL 5% | Twice daily | Apply to scalp at 12-hour intervals. |
| Continue twice daily | 2-6 weeks | Temporary shedding is a positive sign. |
| Continue twice daily | 3-6 months | New hair growth becomes visible. |
| Continue twice daily | 6-12 months | Maximum results. |
How it compares
| Hair-loss treatments compared | How it works | Best suited for | Dosing | First visible results |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finasteride 1 mg | Blocks conversion of testosterone to DHT (5-alpha-reductase inhibitor) | Men with pattern hair loss at the crown and mid-scalp | One tablet daily | 3 to 6 months |
| Minoxidil (topical) | Stimulates follicles and prolongs the growth phase | Men and women; works on most pattern-loss areas | Applied to dry scalp twice daily | 8 to 16 weeks |
| Female combination plan | Topical stimulation, with anti-androgen options a doctor may add | Women with pattern thinning or a widening part | As prescribed in your plan | 12 to 24 weeks |
Combining a DHT blocker with topical minoxidil outperforms either alone in men; your doctor will advise the right combination.
Side effects
Scalp irritation
Mild dryness, itching, or redness at the application site is common. Using the foam formulation instead of the solution can help.
Oral minoxidil side effects
Low-dose oral minoxidil may cause mild fluid retention, increased heart rate, or headache. Your doctor will monitor these. Report any chest pain, dizziness, or rapid heartbeat.
Unwanted hair growth
Some patients may notice fine hair growth on the face or hands. This is usually mild and reversible.
Do not use if
- Allergy to minoxidil or ingredients such as propylene glycol
- Scalp conditions that break the skin barrier (infection, psoriasis flare, sunburn) until healed
- Sudden, patchy or unexplained hair loss: get a diagnosis first
- Uncontrolled heart disease or blood-pressure problems: discuss with your doctor first
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Keep the product away from pets: even small licked amounts are toxic to cats and dogs.
When to contact your doctor
- Persistent scalp irritation or allergic reaction
- Rapid heartbeat, chest pain, or dizziness (oral form)
- No visible improvement after 12 months of consistent use
Storage
Store at room temperature below 25°C. Keep the cap tightly closed. Do not use if the solution has changed colour or has particles.
What to expect
Minoxidil is a vasodilator that increases blood flow to hair follicles, stimulating growth. It works best as a long-term treatment: stopping will cause hair loss to return within 3-6 months. Combination with finasteride (the gold standard) gives better results than either alone. Results vary by patient; consistency for 6-12 months is needed to evaluate effectiveness.
