How to use

  1. What it is and how it works

Adapalene is a topical retinoid that helps prevent blocked pores; benzoyl peroxide reduces acne-associated bacteria. The fixed combination treats comedones, papules and pustules without a topical antibiotic.

  2. Apply it as prescribed

Once daily at bedtime, apply a thin, even layer to clean, fully dry skin over the affected area. Avoid the eyes, lips, mucosa, cuts, eczema and sunburn. Wash your hands afterwards.

  3. Skin care and interactions

Do not use another topical retinoid or benzoyl peroxide product. Keep cleansers and moisturisers gentle and non-comedogenic, avoid abrasive or drying products, and use SPF 30–50+ daily. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair and coloured fabrics.

Monitoring

First 4 weeks. Photograph your face in the same light at the start; lesion counts fall before the change is obvious. Dryness, peeling and redness are expected and peak around week 2. Moisturise after the gel and use SPF each morning. Use white towels and pillowcases; benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric and hair.

Weeks 4-12 and beyond. Tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant or plan a pregnancy; the gel must be stopped. Stop and ask for review for severe burning, swelling or blistering, or if acne is worsening or scarring. At 12 weeks, compare photos with your doctor; if it has worked, the gel continues as maintenance.

  1. Weeks 1-12

    • Thin film every evening

Whole affected area on clean, dry skin; alternate evenings for the first 2 weeks if the skin is reactive.

  2. At 12 weeks, is the acne clear or nearly clear on your photos?

    Yes

    Continue as maintenance

NICE recommends this combination as maintenance; review every 12 weeks.

    No

    Doctor review

Your doctor may add an oral antibiotic course, switch the topical, or refer for in-person care if scarring.

  3. Optimising results

    Tolerance is the limit

    • Slow down, do not stop

Alternate evenings and a heavier moisturiser usually resolve irritation within 2 weeks.

    Response is the limit

    • Add an oral option

For moderate to severe acne, NICE pairs this gel with oral lymecycline or doxycycline for 12 weeks.

Side effects

Local irritation

Mild redness, dryness, stinging or peeling can occur, especially at the start. Use a gentle moisturiser and follow the prescribed adjustment plan. Stop and seek advice if the reaction is marked or persistent.

Sun sensitivity and bleaching

Treated skin may be more sensitive to sunlight. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair, towels, bedding and clothing; let the gel dry before contact with fabric.

06

Do not use if

  • You are allergic to adapalene, benzoyl peroxide or another ingredient
  • You are pregnant or trying to conceive
  • The treatment area has cuts, eczema, severe irritation or sunburn
07

When to contact your doctor

  • Facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, eye pain, light sensitivity or altered vision: seek urgent medical care
  • You become pregnant or think pregnancy is possible: stop the treatment and contact your clinician
  • Irritation remains painful despite reducing frequency, or acne is worsening or scarring
08

Storage

Keep the tube tightly closed in its original package, out of children's reach. Follow the temperature and expiry instructions on the label and do not use the product after it expires.

09

What to expect

Acne treatment is gradual. Judge the response at the planned 8–12-week review rather than adding more gel or other active products. New nodules, cysts or scars need an earlier assessment.
