Hydroquinone safety summary
Hydroquinone is a depigmenting medicine applied only to melasma patches during a time-limited, supervised course.

What it's used for
- Use only as prescribed on the affected skin.
- Follow the treatment plan and review schedule your doctor gives you.
Most common side effects
- Mild redness, stinging, dryness or irritation.
- Temporary colour change if used with benzoyl peroxide.
Serious side effects: stop and seek care
- Blue-black darkening of the skin, which can indicate ochronosis.
- Severe irritation, swelling or an allergic reaction.
Who should not use it
- Allergy to hydroquinone or any ingredient in the preparation.
- Pregnancy, broken skin or previous ochronosis.
Interactions to flag
- Do not use benzoyl peroxide on the same area.
- Tell the doctor about tretinoin, exfoliating acids and other depigmenting products.

- The skin becomes blue-black, painful or markedly inflamed.
- The patches do not improve within the planned review period.
