Azelaic acid safety summary
Azelaic acid gel treats inflammatory acne and papulopustular rosacea. It reduces blocked pores and inflammation on the treated skin.

What it's used for
- Use only as prescribed on the affected skin.
- Follow the treatment plan and review schedule your doctor gives you.
Most common side effects
- Burning, itching or pain where the gel is applied.
- Dryness, redness, peeling or irritation.
Serious side effects: stop and seek care
- Severe swelling, hives or difficulty breathing.
- Worsening asthma or marked skin irritation.
Who should not use it
- Allergy to azelaic acid or any ingredient in the gel.
- Broken, sunburnt or strongly irritated skin must recover first.
Interactions to flag
- Avoid harsh cleansers, astringents, alcohol-based products and abrasive exfoliants.
- Keep it away from the eyes, mouth and other mucous membranes.
